Netflix hopes to redeem itself with video games studio
Netflix is planning to build its own video game studio after battling to maintain its top spot in the streaming wars.
Helsinki, Finland, will be the home of the new studio.
Former Zynga and Electronic Arts executive Marko Lastikka will be the studio's
new director.
While it is still early, some gaming experts predict Netflix
will ultimately dig deeper into gaming and
that the studio will assist it in gaining a top position in the video game
battle.
"Netflix's push into gaming isn't a major surprise;
given the fierce competition that entertainment streaming has encountered, the
business has sought to broaden its offering and attract a larger
audience," Max Daniels, head of gaming at forensic consultancy firm Field
Associates, tells Verdict.
"[It is] one that transforms them beyond streaming TV
and cinema into a unified entertainment ecosystem," Paine adds. "Of
course, it's a wise strategy to capitalize on their massive user base and
develop proprietary IP."
Netflix's video game studio is not the company's first foray
into gaming. There are already mobile apps and TV series based on popular video
games like The Witcher."[It] lured customers to the service in the early
days, but Netflix now requires a blockbuster title to increase its appeal,"
says Rupantar Guha, analyst at research company GlobalData.
